Transplant Hepatology Fellowship Program (THFP)

Around 80% practice of a gastroenterologist comprises of management of liver diseases. Most of the end stage liver disease patients will eventually need liver transplantation as a long-term definitive option.

The aim of Transplant Hepatology Fellowship Program is to provide the newly qualified gastroenterologists, additional set of skills and training to manage patients of end stage liver disease, triage patients needing liver transplantation, medically optimize them prior to transplant, learn the intricacies of post liver transplant immunosuppression and manage them long term with careful tailoring of immunosuppression and keep vigilance on post-transplant metabolic complications over long term period.

Ultimately the Program will help set up independent Liver Transplant programs in the country for comprehensive management of patients with liver diseases. 

The Program aims to train competent gastroenterologist in the field of Transplant Hepatology, to improve care of patients with liver diseases and be well versed with Liver transplant.

Program Eligibility          

DM/DNB (Medical Gastroenterology) or any equivalent qualification

Clinical Training

  • To acquire skills in patient care both in OP and IP cases
  • Follow protocol-based management of various cases of liver disease keeping in mind the
    various International and Indian guidelines,
  • The training program will include research work and publications.
  • In the Journal Club, each fellow will review relevant studies published in the latest
    journals, present them and critically analyze the design of the study, the
    results, drawbacks and feasibility of carrying out the study in our set up.
  • In the Mortality Meetings, the treatment course and probable cause of death of
    patients in the ward will be discussed.
  • For Liver transplant and liver tumors, an in-house interdisciplinary approach will be
    adopted to patient care
